Composters
Composting turns kitchen scraps and yard waste into nutrient rich humus that can be returned to the ground as organic fertilizer, reducing the amount of organic waste going into landfills. Composting speeds up the natural process of decomposition by raising the temperatures that often accompany it. The heat is generated naturally by exothermic processes, which in turn reduces the generational time of microorganisms, thereby speeding the decomposition process.
Given the right conditions the process virtually runs itself. Optimal circumstances are necessary for large amounts of organic waste to decompose properly. Compost needs to be well ventilated to ensure a good supply of oxygen. As the temperature rises within the compost available oxygen is consumed more rapidly, and if not replaced, this can generate to foul smelling odors. The easiest way to eliminate odor is to mix up the compost from time to time.
Decomposition is a natural process. Organic materials in contact with the ground will decompose over time. Manufactured composters speed up the decomposition process and keep the compost contained and out of site. There are a variety of different composters on the market. Those listed below are some of the most popular.
